A: Register My Copyright helps artists gain full protection for their works. Under U.S. law, you receive nominal protection without registration, but that protection means little without the ability to actually invoke that protection. Register My Copyright helps you register your copyright so you can recover attorneys' fees and statutory damages (since it is hard to show the monetary damage done by infringement, U.S. law allows that damages may be collected by the showing of infringement). Without registration, you cannot even file a lawsuit, and you do not receive attorneys' fees and statutory damages against infringements that occur before registration. If you register within three months of publication you will be able to receive attorneys' fees and statutory damages against infringements that occur within the first three months after publication. Q: How soon will my copyright be effective? A: Your copyright will be effective as soon as it is in good order and received by the U.S. Copyright Office. Q: How soon will my copyright be processed? A: It takes from four to seven months for the U.S. Copyright Office to process your application, but your copyright becomes effective as soon as it is received by the Office. Q: When will I receive my certificate of registration of my application?
